Constructed by Mount Isa Mines between 1956 and 1958 to secure water for the growing mining town, Lake Moondarra was completed in 1958 at a cost of £1.7 million. It has a capacity of 103000 to 107000 megalitres. Originally the Leichhardt River Dam, it was named "Lake Moondarra" (Aboriginal for "plenty rain" or "thunder") in 1961.
