The original Walkley Cottage was a prefabricated timber dwelling or “portable colonial cottage” made by Henry Manning of High Holborn, London, and erected on Pennington Terrace in 1839. The building illustrated the piecemeal development of early Australian houses, with the brickwork of later years totally encasing the original timber house.
Manning’s Portable Colonial Cottage, represented in the exhibition through advertisements in both British and Australian newspapers, is one of the earliest visually documented replicable homes. Also included are newspaper ads for kit homes designed by Sears, Roebuck & Co. and E. F.
