The California Golden Seals were a professional ice hockey club that competed in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 to 1976. Based in Oakland, California, they played their home games at the Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum Arena. The Seals were one of six teams added to the league as part of the 1967 NHL expansion.

The City wound up with the Oakland Seals of the National Hockey League when the League expanded to twelve teams in 1967 and they also attracted the San Francisco Warriors of the National Basketball League who later became the Golden State Warriors, drawing them away from San Francisco, just nine miles away across the Bay bridge.

The team became known as “Adversity on Ice” for its ability to play its best hockey when its back was against the wall. In the second round versus Portland, the Seals found themselves down 3-1 in the series, but they roared back to win it in seven games.

The California Golden Seals were a team in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1967 – 76. Initially named California Seals, the team was renamed Oakland Seals part-way through the 1967–68 season, and then to California Golden Seals in 1970.

They usually feature a plucky Seal wearing a hockey uniform (a few years before the famous “Sparky” ever did) and who bravely stands up to the villainous other teams of the NHL who were either gearing up to take on Oakland’s hockey heroes or who were standing in the Seals way in the playoff race.
