Some of the most renowned Elizabethan England works of Art are the miniature paintings. Miniatures are a revived classical form of art stemming from the tradition of illuminated manuscripts as well as from the Renaissance’s portrait medals.

The artists of the Tudor court are the painters and limners engaged by the monarchs of England's Tudor dynasty and their courtiers between 1485 and 1603, from the reign of Henry VII to the death of Elizabeth I.

Some of the famous portrait artists in the Elizabethan era were Nicholas Hilliard, Lucas Horenbout and Marcus Gheeraerts II. There were other famous artists who came from other countries such as Petrus Christus and Hans Memling who were from the Netherlands.

May 29, 2017 · Queen Elizabeth I and Sir Amias Paulet are on loan to Waddesdon from a Rothschild family collection and will be the focus of a special display from 7 June. It was while they were undergoing conservation at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, that findings made by Rupert Featherstone and his team suggested they might be by Hilliard.

Elizabethan artists drew from European Renaissance ideals, but they also brought a unique national sensibility to their work. Among the many influences on their style was Elizabeth herself. Her image was often invoked in painting and literature, and her appreciation of music, dancing, and pageantry raised them to a higher level of artistry.

Elizabeth I’s favored court painter, the Englishman Nicholas Hilliard (ca. 1547–1619), is best known for his miniature paintings. Following the tradition associated with Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98–1543), Hilliard’s style emphasized distinctive line and reduced shadow.
