As the year draws to a close, skywatchers have an opportunity to witness the annual Ursid meteor shower, an event that promises dazzling streaks lighting up the night sky. The Ursids mark the second week of back-to-back displays,

The shower forms from the debris of an asteroid and peaks this weekend. But a nearly full moon could interfere with viewing.

Under optimal conditions, stargazers could witness up to 100 meteors per hour streaking across the night sky. However, this year’s viewing will be tempered by the brightness of a full moon, which might wash out some of the dimmer meteors. Nevertheless, in areas with minimal light you can still capture some of the brighter fireballs.
