The Vermont men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win against Marshall on Monday night to win its first national championship in program history. The Catamounts were able to secure the national title in very dramatic fashion.

Vermont (16-2-6) became the first squad in school history to win a national championship in a team sport — with the skiing program winning six national championships. The Catamounts were also first America East team to ever make a national title game in a team sport.

Vermont soccer won its first NCAA championship on Monday. The hero was Maximilian Kissel, who scored the overtime goal to lift the Catamounts to a 2-1 win over Marshall in the national championship in Cary, N.C. The goal was Kissel's sixth winner of the season.

Kissell drilled a perfect goal in the extra period to lift Vermont to a 2-1 win over Marshall to officially win the 2024 Men’s College Cup and claim the program’s first ever national championship.

Vermont soccer was labeled an underdog outside the program, but years of building the program culminated with Monday's championship.

The University of Vermont earned its first-ever NCAA Division I national championship in a team sport in dramatic fashion on Monday. The unseeded Catamounts upset No. 13 Marshall University 2-1 in overtime in men’s soccer at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

And, of course, it was a stunning, well-earned result for Vermont program and its followers. Zach Barrett and his backline teammate Max Murray decided to come back for one more season, to fulfill a five-year goal of winning an NCAA title. The Catamounts had close calls with 2022's quarterfinal run and last year's Round of 16 exit.
