A new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau rule means consumers’ hospital and doctor bills can no longer weigh down their credit scores.

A rule finalized this week bans outstanding medical debts from appearing on credit reports and prohibits lenders from using the information.

Syrjala says medical bills alone do not determine whether or not you will be accepted for a loan or mortgage. The reason for this change is that the CFPB finds medical debts ‘provide little predictive value to lenders about borrowers’ ability to repay other debts.’
