Bangladesh plans to hold national election between the end of 2025 and the first half of 2026, its interim leader said, making it the first time his administration has provided a roadmap on polls after the nation was thrown into political turmoil earlier this year.

Bangladesh's interim leader Muhammad Yunus, who heads the caretaker government installed after an August revolution, said Monday that general elections would be held late next year or in early 2026.Bangladesh last held general elections in January when Hasina celebrated victory --  poll denounced as neither free nor fair and boycotted by rivals after a crackdown during which thousands of opposition party members were arrested.

He said, "If political consensus allows us, again, to conduct elections based on accurate electoral rolls with a few reforms, it may be possible to hold elections by the end of 2025." Yunus acknowledged,
