OpenAI executives updated reporters on Thursday about the level of interest the company is seeing from states interested in building large data centers.

ChatGPT creator OpenAI, Softbank and Oracle, along with other equity backers of Stargate, have committed $100 billion for immediate deployment, with the remaining investment expected over the next four years, according to the White House. The first of Stargate’s data centers are already under construction in Abilene, Texas.

Oracle is currently hiring for a number of roles supporting the ongoing buildout of its Abilene, Texas, data center campus. That site will be the first to support The Stargate Project, a $500 billion effort to build AI data centers for OpenAI. With 10-20 data centers planned at the campus, it could become the largest cluster in the world.

The companies in Stargate, the new consortium to build out AI infrastructure for OpenAI, are actively considering siting new data center projects in more than a dozen states, OpenAI announced Thursday.
