Petrol went up 2p a litre in January to an average of 139p and diesel by nearly 3p to 145.7p (from 142.9p), the RAC says.

The national average price for a gallon of diesel soared 11.3 cents to $3.715, the biggest single increase in nearly a year and a half, according to the Energy Information Administration.
