The remarks made by Amit Shah came when the Lok Sabha was hearing objections to the introduction of the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill that seeks to usher in simultaneous polls to the Lower House and state assemblies.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said that when the 'One Nation, One Election' Bill was taken up in the cabinet for approval, Prime Minister Narendra Modi suggested that the bill be sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed discussions.

The One Nation, One Election Bill was tabled in the Lok Sabha today (December 17), triggering protests from the opposition.

The ONOE proposal was a key part of the BJP’s 2024 manifesto and has been strongly endorsed by Prime Minister Modi, who views it as a transformational electoral reform. However, opposition parties argue that the measure undermines India’s federal structure and democratic accountability.

Former President and chairman of the high level committee on One Nation, One Election’ Ramnath Kovind said that the ‘One Nation, One Election’ model is competent for the all-round progress of the Indian population.

These bills are ONOP bill, officially titled The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also likely to give a reply to the debate on supplementary demands for grants for 2024-25.
