Greeting, gamblers.A champion will be crowned tonight when Ohio State takes on Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff national championship. In order to reach the title game, Ohio State defeated the likes of No. 1 Oregon and No. 5 Texas, while Notre Dame topped No. 2 Georgia and No. 6 Penn State to reach the college football mountaintop. While the Buckeyes have looked like an absolute juggernaut throughout the CFP, our Bruce Marshall points out that the Fighting Irish have covered the spread in 11 straight games, dating back to late September. Notre Dame's defense has been among the most disruptive in the country this season as they've allowed 298.3 yards per contest (ninth in the nation), while also yielding just 14.3 points (second in the country). Irish defensive coordinator Al Golden has had his unit playing at an elite level all season, and this group has the talent to keep this game fairly close on the sport's biggest stage. According to CBS Sports HQ's Jim Bowden, former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Anthony Santander has agreed to a five-year deal that will be worth over $90 million. There is a sixth year club option that could make the contract's total value up to $110 million. The Blue Jays had missed out on signing several high-profile free agents this offseason, including Corbin Burnes, Juan Soto, Roki Sasaki, and Max Fried. In acquiring the services of Santander, Toronto lands a hitter that can provide significant power in the middle of their lineup alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and George Springer. Santander hit .235 with 44 home runs and 102 RBIs in his final year with the Orioles. Prior to free agency getting underway, CBS Sports MLB writer R.J. Anderson provided a scouting report of Santander.Anderson:"In addition to being living proof that there are still quality players to be unearthed in the Rule 5 draft, Santander became the first switch-hitter to homer 40 or more times in a season since Carlos Beltrán and Lance Berkman both did it in 2006. Santander isn't a mindless slugger (not that there would be anything wrong with that); he's adept at making above-average amounts of contact, allowing him to keep his strikeout rate underneath 20% despite what could be charitably described as an excitable approach. Unfortunately, Santander doesn't bring much more to the table than his bat: he's not a good defender or baserunner, meaning interested clubs will have to be confident that he can sustain his well-above-average offensive production well into his 30s." 🔥 The Hot TicketCFP championship: Ohio State at Notre Dame, 7:30 p.m. | TV: ESPNThe Pick: Notre Dame +8.5 (-107)Key trend: Notre Dame is 10-0 ATS in its last 10 games.SportsLine expert Bruce Marshall is 4-1 in his last five ATS picks involving Notre Dame.Marshall:"It's worth mentioning that lesser Notre Dame teams gave Ohio State all it could handle the past two seasons and even covered on both occasions. The Fighting Irish were also one play away from victory last season at South Bend. Both the 2022 (21-10) and 2023 (17-14) meetings produced scores that suggest Al Golden's defense can keep Ohio State in check, and those were Buckeye sides with C.J. Stroud in 2022 and Marvin Harrison Jr. in 2023 in each of the last two seasons. This is a better Notre Dame team with another top-tier Golden defense and a big-play offense that is led by quarterback Riley Leonard. It's worth noting that the Irish have covered the spread in 11 consecutive games this season and are 23-5 against the spread under coach Marcus Freeman since the 2023 season."👀 Here's what else SportsLine is saying about the game: The Projection Model has a "B" pick on the moneyline, while having "C" picks on the spread and total.
