Eric Staal became the fourth player to have his number retired by the Carolina Hurricanes when his No. 12 was raised at the Lenovo Center prior to the team’s game against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

Eric Staal played 12 of his 18 seasons in the NHL with the Canes. Sunday, he’ll notch another milestone: His jersey will be retired at Lenovo Center.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Eric Staal, the leading scorer in the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2006 when the Carolina Hurricanes won the Cup, had his jersey retired in a pregame ceremony before the Hurricanes hosted the Anaheim Ducks at Lenovo Center on Sunday.

As a player for the Carolina Hurricanes, Eric Staal didn’t have to sit through many ceremonies like the one retiring his No. 12 on Sunday. Thanks to him and his teammates, the Canes have a lot of them these days.

The NHL is revealing quarter century teams for every team in the league and today, they revealed the Carolina Hurricanes First and Second Quarter-Century Teams. The members were voted on by a panel comprised of local media, retired players and club executives.

Staal retired in July after signing a one-day contract with the team. He now joins Rod Brind’Amour (17), Ron Francis (10) and Glen Wesley (2) in the rafters.

The Carolina Hurricanes retired Eric Staal’s jersey Sunday, then put him to work. Staal was the siren sounder at the Lenovo Center as the Canes took the ice to face the Anaheim Ducks.

"The memory I have of being a Hurricane is of winning and being a champion. I won a Stanley Cup - I only won one, it's not easy to win, and I won it here. There's nothing better than that."
