A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Tuesday night into Thursday as Santa Ana winds sweep back into the Southern California forecast, according to the National Weather Service.

The Franklin fire was 38% contained as of Saturday evening. 19 structures have been confirmed destroyed and an additional 23 damaged, officials said. Eight of the buildings destroyed were homes.

The start to the week is expected to be warmer with above average temperatures Monday and Santa Ana winds anticipated by mid-week, according to the National Weather Service.

But in California, the same effect is named the Santa Ana wind. Instead of melting snow, Santa Ana winds deliver warm air with very low humidity to the coast of California and this wind is often very strong where it is channeled through the canyons common along California's coastal region.

San Diego County edged closer to drought Tuesday, whipped by fierce and damaging Santa Ana winds that further dried out a region that hasn’t gotten a long, deep soaking of rain since March.

Californian residents are well aware of the yearly weather phenomenon known as the Santa Ana winds, but many outside the Golden State may not be familiar with them. These winds can cause damage and significantly increase the risk of wildfires.
