More than 45,000 Palestinians have now been killed in the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas militants, health officials in the embattled territory said Monday, as often-stalled ceasefire negotiations appeared to be gaining ground.

Airwars, which charts civilian casualties of 21st century conflict, calls Israel’s campaign in Gaza “by far the most intense, destructive, and fatal conflict” it has tracked.

Meanwhile, Israel has warned Lebanese that any breaking of the current pause in fighting will be met with massive force directed not just against Hezbollah but also against Lebanese society more generally.

Hamas has reportedly agreed to allow Israeli troops to remain in Gaza in a major about-turn that could unblock a hostage deal.

The Palestinian militant group has engaged in talks with rival Fatah over a unity committee to govern Gaza. It reflects Hamas’ diminished prospects following more than a year of conflict.

Israeli airstrikes killed more than 50 people in Gaza overnight. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the death toll between Israel and Hamas Militants now topped 45,000 people.
