Elon Musk has offered to buy the non-profit part of OpenAI for $97.4 billion. The pitch, which Musk says is backed by a group of investors, comes as OpenAI is trying to shift to being for-profit, raise tens of billions, and spend them on the data center initiative Stargate.

The tech mogul is unlikely to win. But his goal may be more about making life difficult for the A.I. start-up and its leader, Sam Altman.
