The El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the man as Wade Langston. According to a release from the school, Langston was killed when a weight thrown by a participant went over a barrier and struck him. In the weight throw event in indoor track and field, the implement used is a weight attached to a grip.

The man, who was watching in the audience at the UCCS fieldhouse, died when a hammer weight thrown by a participant cleared “certified barriers” and struck him.
