Mayor Brandon Johnson’s 2025 budget plan made it through the City Council on Monday, a hard-fought victory for the mayor that spares City Hall an unprecedented government shutdown after one of Chicago’s most chaotic budget cycles in recent years.

The approved budget includes cutting middle management positions and reducing the city’s debt obligation payment by $40 million.

The Chicago City Council approved an approximately $17 billion budget for 2025 that raises levies and fees by about $256 million after Mayor Brandon Johnson removed his proposed property tax hike.
