According to a report in former CNN reporter Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter, CNN chief Mark Thompson allegedly called Acosta on Wednesday night (January 15) to deliver a “strange proposal” that caught the veteran broadcaster off guard.

The CNN anchor capped off his monologue by holding up a bright pink poster that was given to him by a viewer at the start of Trump’s first administration in 2016. The placard featured a hand-drawn fist holding a pencil below the words, “I March For Jim Acosta and a FREE PRESS.”

Depending on who you ask, CNN anchor Jim Acosta is getting a chance to speak to a much broader audience with an assignment at a new and non-traditional time slot, or he’s being removed entirely from the usual daily discussion around the news.

CNN chief Mark Thompson called Jim Acosta on Wednesday to propose that his show, CNN Newsroom with Jim Acosta, be moved from its 10 a.m. ET time slot to midnight, according to the newsletter Status News.

In an apparent dig at Trump, Acosta said, “We are not the enemy of the people. We are the defenders of the people.”
