Alongside Lucy Punch is Joanna Lumley who is back as Amanda's narcissistic mum, Felicity, while the amazing Philippa Dunne returns as Amanda's long-suffering minion - sorry, I mean friend - Anne Flynn. Each returning as their iconic Motherland characters, but this time stepped up a gear and polished to comedy perfection.

Before being cast in the BBC comedy, Lucy already had quite a varied career in film, acting alongside Anne Hathaway in the fairytale reimagining Ella Enchanted and, interestingly enough, performing another slanted take on a wicked stepsister a decade later in the musical Into The Woods.

The spin-off’s focus is in its name: it will centre around the new life of Amanda, the self-obsessed leader of the original sitcom’s “Alpha Mums”. As Motherland neared its end, we saw the facade of Amanda’s seemingly perfect life crumble when her husband filed for divorce and she was forced out of her envy-inducing Acton home.

The "narcissism-powered dynamic" between Amanda and her mother, Felicity, is, the critic noted, "played with Ab Fab levels of relish by Joanna Lumley".

When Motherland was quietly cancelled after its Christmas special in 2022, a small subsection of people in the UK were very, very angry. Strongly worded tweets were sent. Mumsnet message boards were filled with incensed comments.
