A bit boring. Saw some turtles. Observed an alligator. Saw a crane flying near us. The gravel road was annoying. Parking was limited. Walking trail was not well maintained. It was free. The rangers w… Full review by 941michaelf

This wildlife loop drive has to be on your OBX visit to-do-list! It did not disappoint in any way and exceeded our expectations. First off, start at the outstanding refuge centre where the amazingly… Full review by Ipkiss1066

We loved the peaceful vibe and informative guide. Victoria was amazing at identifying bird calls and helping us see the variety of birds in the area. So much natural beauty in one place! Definitely … Full review by lizf964

The photos I posted are from last Oct. November 2017 been to the reserve twice, no luck. Fields were plowed over, so the bears scattered instead of keeping to the fields. Based on what I see on IG, one can still spot them, but it takes much longer. Our sightings year-to-year are mostly Aug-Oct.
Any camping nearby and when is a good time of year for birdwatching?

Hey. I am not sure. I would say that early morning or late afternoon would be the best times to see them and not sure if its hibernate time for them then. The visitor center was very resourceful with questions. Here is the number 252-473-1131. Google answer for bears hibernate in North Carolina. Answer: Females typically hibernate longer than males. North Carolina's bears just do it for shorter time periods than their northern cousins. Bears studied in eastern North Carolina by radio-telemetry entered dens as early as November and as late as January. Hope this helps some. Thanks for the question. Good luck if you go. Chris
where is this actually located? i saw it on google maps south of buffalo city, but when i save it on TA it shows it on the outer banks/roanoke island
A:
The National Wildlife Refuges Visitors Center is on Roanoke Island, but the Alligator Refuge itself and its wildlife drive and trails are located west over the 64 bridge on the mainland.
