Amazing bit of history-- a road was built through this place for a hundred years, the Ottomans added artillery, and the whole place is quite picturesque. Good displays, overall this was good. Full review by Dave C

Check carefully but as I recall the nearest bridge across the Danube is 1 1/2 hours upstream toward Belgrade or two hours downstream. Driving along the Iron Gate might be pretty. …

Check carefully but as I recall the nearest bridge across the Danube is 1 1/2 hours upstream toward Belgrade or two hours downstream. Driving along the Iron Gate might be pretty. But better option is to look for a boat that you can ride down river a few hours and back.

Wanting to visit the fortress but wondering if you can enter it without doing a tour?

I am sure you can. We went with our guide, but it seemed to me that other people were wandering on their own.
